I have recently started taking the time to watch anime that I wouldn’t normally watch. This one in particular just happened to catch my attention. With only 12 episodes, I decided to give it a try.
“My roommate is a Cat” follows the story of Subaru Mikazuki, a 23 year old novel author who is socially awkward and a home body. One day, Subaru runs into a small cat, named Haru, which he ends up taking home and the two begin an unlikely friendship.
Being a cat owner myself, I found this anime to be so refreshingly sweet and a nice change to the normal romance or action anime I am prone to binge. The different perspectives of scenes from Subaru’s and Haru’s point of view really made for some touching moments, some funny , others sweet, but all just a delight. After watching this one, I now think, “What is my own cat thinking when I do some of the things I do?” Is she like Haru, with food always on the brain?
Another point worth mentioning, is the great character development of Subaru’s character in just 12 episodes. Subaru’s parents tragically died in an accident when he was young, so you see him go through being alone for the better part of his life, to finally have others around and Haru seems to be the gateway. Subaru is forced to face his past in order to be able to come into the light of his future where having friends and even a roommate that is a cat, is not such a bad thing, but something that he has needed for a long time.
