Tamon’s B-Side, by Yuki Shiwasu, is a romantic comedy with an idol twist: high schooler Utage Kinoshita works as a housekeeper to afford her fangirl obsession with Tamon Fukuhara, the “Sexy & Wild” member of the boy band F/ACE.

One day, fate (and a work assignment) sends Utage to Tamon’s house, only to discover that the idol she adores is far from his glamorous image in private. Tamon oscillates between “Hottiehara” persona onstage and a gloomy, imposter-syndrome-ridden “Gloomyhara” offstage. Together these two begin a slow burn that will have you down right feeling the sugar. Let’s dive into why I have already read up to the 8th volume now.

Characters That Steal the Show: Utage’s wildly expressive visuals delivers some of the most hilarious facial expressions and visual gags. Utage is eccentric, endearing, and grounded, even with her fanaticism. Meanwhile, Tamon’s dual personas are an absolute riot to watch, especially as she reacts to his sudden mood shifts. The other idol members are on all spectrums, and I love how Shiwasu takes the time to introduce and develop the characters with each passing volume.

Fan X Idol Dynamics: I really love the dynamics between Utage and Tamon from the fan x idol perspective. Utage loves Tamon as her idol, and truly respects his work, his persona, and uses her love of F/ACE to encourage and support Tamon. It’s refreshing to see his growth and development with Utage by his side.

Verdict

If you’re drawn to stories bursting with humor, expressive art, and a sweet-but-funny romance, Tamon’s B-Side is a gem. With a lovable cast, sharp comedic timing, and surprising heart beneath its bells and whistles, Yuki Shiwasu delivers a manga that’s both entertaining and emotionally resonant. I 100% approve this manga!
