In the world of anime, death sometimes befalls some of the most loveable of characters. Whether it’s to develop the main character to reach new horizons or the author just plain loves to torture its audience, here are three anime deaths most fans are still not over.
Kyojuro Rengoku (Demon Slayer)

Rengoku’s death was one of those that really got me right in my core. First, Tanjiro and the team witnessed it first hand and even though they had recently got to know Rengoku, they admired his courage, his strength, and his kindness. We’ve been with Tanjiro through it all at this point, so seeing him lose his new idol in a heroic way was more impactful.
Not going to lie, I felt like there was so much more I wanted to see of Rengoku, so his death early on felt like I couldn’t get closure on his character. I wanted more backstory, a training arc with the main squad, I wanted to see Rengoku’s own character development. He had so much potential as a character.
I hope a side story will eventually be in the works for this one cause he set my heart and soul ablaze.
Kaori Miyazono (Your Lie in April)

This girl right here is why I don’t think I could ever be able to watch Your Lie in April again. Her death was truly tragic in every way. She fought so hard to live, she wanted to live, she tried so very hard, even risking a surgery to cure her of her fate. I just felt so much sadness watching this unfold and how much it impacted Kousei. It truly was an ending, that to this day, keeps me from rewatching this masterpiece.
Jiriaya (Naruto Shippuden)

This death right here is the one that hurts me the most out of all the deaths I have seen in the anime universe. Jiriaya was a personal favorite of mine. He had been the guy that changed Naruto’s future, set him out on the right path, became his Sensei, became his mentor, and like a second father to Naruto. The bond between him and Naruto, was something that was heartwarming.
That death scene, seeing Jiriaya slowly fade into the dark abyss of the sea just hit me like a ton of bricks. No family, no friends, just him, alone in the sea slowly fading to nothingness.
I believed Jiriaya DESERVED better than his fate.
Rest in Peace my white-haired frog tamer, my sensei, my pervy sage…
“My duty is to be a model for the next generation and set a good example for them. And for that, I’ll gladly lay down my life, and I’ll be smiling the whole time.” -Jiriaya
